Strain Spotlight – Bluefin Tuna Kush (Indica)

Initial Thoughts

I’ve never caught a tuna fish, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that they probably don’t smell as delicious as this bud. I address this subject more in our upcoming article on the History of Skunk, but what is it about seemingly bad smells in cannabis that we find attractive? Of course, there are the classic and very delicious smelling strains out there like Strawberry Cough or Pineapple Express.

However, there are also tons of strains that have been bred to smell as horrible as possible. Strains like Cat Piss and Dog Shit, which you guessed it, smell exactly like cat pee and dog poo. These strains are very divisive, with many newer smokers turning their noses away from them. More seasoned cannabis users tend to appreciate the less appealing terpenes. Similar to many alcoholic spirits, these strains may depend on refined pallets and are more acquired tastes. Tuna Kush has earned its spot among these strains as being both incredibly appealing and, at times, completely revolting.

On the other side is Blueberry. When I was younger and traveling through Amsterdam, I asked the gentleman at my local coffeeshop which strain would put me to sleep and beat jet lag. He didn’t even answer, but instead just weighed out a gram of Blueberry and put his hand out for the money.

It quickly became one of my favourite strains. With incredible taste and hallmark indica qualities, Blueberry had so much of what I was looking for in cannabis.

By marrying the sweet and delicious Blueberry genetics with the fishy and dank Tuna Kush, the breeders have created a truly remarkable strain. A very potent indica, Bluefin Tuna Kush sets itself apart by being one of the best tasting and strongest buds around today.

Taste

Tuna Kush existed in the same realm as many other foul-smelling strains for a long time. Some enjoyed the intense fishy smell, while others found it too abrasive. Reported to be bred in BC, the strain has grown in popularity across the continent in recent years. However, once it was crossed with Blueberry, the once offputting stench transformed into something magical and undeniably kushy.

Whereas with Tuna Kush,  where the first thing you’d smell was its namesake, the notes are more subtle in the Bluefin Tuna Kush. The mix of sweet and sour terpenes makes for a very gassy and piney smell. It’s undoubtedly a kush and the smell is here to remind you of that.

Bluefin Tuna Kush has a remarkable flavour profile, as it manages to capture the best of both worlds. The sweetness of the Blueberry and the dankness of the Tuna make for an indescribable, yet delicious concoction.

Buds

The buds are incredibly dense and sticky.

The colour is gorgeous shades of sea green. It may not look as frosty as some of its kush relatives, but it makes up for it in being one of the more resinous buds I’ve smoked in a while. The pictures don’t do it justice, as this is a truly unique and potent strain.

Experience

Bluefin Tuna Kush manages to encapsulate everything I love about weed. Its an indica with serious kush qualities. It’s potent, sticky, and the smell and taste are top-notch. The smoke is thick and expansive which sometimes translates to being a bit harsh on the throat (something I have been noticing with the pinier kushy strains). However, the sweet terps from the Blueberry make it easier to handle. The exhale is packed full of flavour. If you’re after that is as potent as the smell is strong, look no further.

The high is immediate and I could feel it right away from my head to my toes as my body buzzed with euphoria. The indica qualities really make themselves known after awhile as you’ll find yourself ready for sleep. {

Perfect end of the day, or at least end of the workday strain. I recommend trying it before using it right before bed, as the strong high might take you a bit by surprise. If so, a bit of time will transform the high from a euphoric one, into a calm and peaceful sleepy one.

This is a strain that all of the staff here at JC absolutely love and celebrate when it comes in. You don’t have to like seafood to enjoy Bluefin Tuna Kush. It’s been bred to have something for almost every smoker out there.

See what all the hype is about and take a swim with the Bluefin Tuna Kush!

As a side note: did anyone know how HUGE tuna fish are!? I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me when I googled it.
Why did I think they were smaller?
Is it because I thought the whole fish could fit in a can?

Yes… Yes, it is.
